Thousands of earthquake children require urgent medical care says UNICEF
ImageISLAMABAD, 12 Oct 2005 (IRIN) - More than 300 children injured in Saturday's devastating regional earthquake have been airlifted to the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, over the last four days. Most of children have head injuries, broken limbs or are severely traumatised by their experiences, said Akhtar Haq, head of local NGO, Friends of the Child, working at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).

Polio immunisation campaign kicks off in Mogadishu
ImageNAIROBI, 23 Sep 2005 (IRIN) - Following the identification of two polio cases in Somalia, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) began a three-day emergency polio immunisation campaign on Thursday in the capital, Mogadishu, officials said.

The two cases, in the country's southern Benadir Region, in which Mogadishu is located, were the first to be identified in Somalia since October 2002. They were detected by WHO's national polio surveillance system, WHO and UNICEF said in a joint statement.

Gov't urged to combat trafficking in human beings
Many women and children have fallen victim to traffickers.BEIRUT, 22 Sep 2005 (IRIN) - Lebanon needs to review its domestic laws and policies to conform to international norms in order to combat widespread trafficking in human beings, especially women and children, a United Nations expert said.

"Lebanon’s victims of trafficking are often invisible because they suffer in places that remain hidden to the public eye such as private homes or hotel rooms," Sigmu Huda, the UN Special Rapporteur on human trafficking told reporters following a fact-finding mission that lasted from 8-15 September.

Despite new health scheme, newborn babies detained in hospital pending payment
ImageACCRA, 16 Sep 2005 (IRIN) - Sitting on a wooden bench in Ghana’s biggest hospital, 28-year-old Gifty Torto breastfeeds her tiny six-week-old son, hugging the newborn she is not allowed to take home.

The baby is being detained pending payment of her hospital bill, so Torto since her discharge three weeks ago has been visiting the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit at Accra’s Korle Bu teaching hospital twice a day to care for him.
The spacious hallway where the mother and baby sit, echoes to the cries of other newborns. Torto is one of 27 women whose infants are being detained in intensive care because of the mothers’ inability to pay the high cost of difficult deliveries by Caeserean section.
